Ye Shiwen clinches Women’s 200m IM gold - FINA Swimming Championships (25m)
Ye Shiwen of China clinched gold medal of the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on fourth day of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey, on Saturday, December 15.
The Chinese swimmer, who holds the record of same discipline in long course format, dictated terms to her challengers in the short course discipline and secured the crown with an improved championship record time.
Shiwen faced strong contest from her following swimmers in the eight-lap discipline as she cruised her way towards the finishing wall for the crown with the timing of 2 minutes and 04.64 seconds.
Her title claiming effort remained 0.08 seconds faster from Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, who finished her race in second place by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 04.72 seconds.
The silver medallist was chased by Hannah Miley of Great Britain, who stayed two and a half body length behind and stepped on the victory stand for bronze medal by clocking an effort of 2 minutes and 07.12 seconds.
Miley was followed by Zsuzsanna Jakabos of Hungary, who stayed 0.24 seconds slower from her former finisher and posted a time of 2 minutes and 07.36 seconds for fourth place.
Jakabos remained 0.41 seconds ahead of Madeline Dirado of USA, who transpired on the finishing end for fifth position by concluding her race in a time of 2 minutes and 07.77 seconds.
Sixth spot of the race was obtained by Melanie Margalis of USA, who was full body length apart and touched the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 08.63 seconds.
Margalis was followed by Sophie Allen of Great Britain, who was half a body length behind and finished her race in seventh place by producing a time of 2 minutes and 09.16 seconds.
Allen was traced by Ganna Dzerkal of Ukraine, who was 2.50 seconds apart and ended her race in eighth place by touching the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 11.66 seconds.
Furthermore, Shiwen was overjoyed with her title claiming effort and collected medal and accolades at the prize ceremony of the event.
