Ye Shiwen lowers Olympic mark of Women’s 200m IM – 2012 London Olympic Games
Chinese expert, Ye Shiwen once again lowered the Olympic mark of the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on day four of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatics Centre on Tuesday, July 31.
The untouchable Chinese swimmer, Ye, who recently broke the world record of 400m IM, went on a rampage in the playoff of the 200m discipline.
The 16-year-old Shiwen, who posted an effort of 2 minutes and 08.39 seconds for the new Olympic record in the semi-final, dictated terms to her opponents with a record-breaking pace in the playoff.
Shiwen improved her timing by 0.82 seconds in the playoff and secured gold medal of the discipline with the timing of 2 minutes and 07.57 seconds.
With her astonishing pace, she remained half body length ahead of Australian swimmer, Alicia Coutts, who occupied silver medal of the race with an effort of 2 minutes and 08.15 seconds.
Coutts was chased by Caitlin Leverenz of USA, who remained 0.80 seconds slower and reached the finishing end for bronze medal with the timing of 2 minutes and 08.95 seconds.
The third position holder was followed by the defending champion, Stephanie Rice of Australia who failed to meet expectations of her supporter and finished fourth in the discipline by hitting the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 09.55 seconds.
Rice was trailed by the world record holder, Ariana Kukors of USA, who stayed 0.28 seconds slower from her former finisher and tapped the wall as fifth position holder by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 09.83 seconds.
Sixth position of the race was secured by Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe, who ended her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 11.13 seconds.
Coventry was followed by Hannah Miley of Great Britain, who touched the finishing wall for seventh position with an effort of 2 minutes and 11.29 seconds.
Similarly, Miley was traced by Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, who completed her race in eighth place with an effort of 2 minutes and 14.19 seconds.
Furthermore, Shiwen was overjoyed with her second gold medal of the London Olympics.
