  1. A few things...

Remember that just because you have a low cost cage doesn't mean the cost will stay low. Food, bedding, treats, tubes, home, ect all adds up. When the cage needs to be changed once a week the bedding and new things add up, ya know?

Also, make sure there is proper ventilation in this homemade cage you're making and make sure there is enough room for your hammy.

  2. Making your own out of something like a big rubbermade bin is a GREAT plan.  Those tube dealies that they make for them tend to be horrid to clean and EASY to escape.

Of course, you will need to cut a section from the top to replace with screen so he can breathe, and also so it doesn't trap MOISTURE in there.  A moist environment is death to hammies and gerbils.

I recommend getting some Carefresh bedding, too.  You can make a lot of toys yourself, just be sure you only use safe materials.  But definitely get a high quality wheel for safety.  Hamsters are very prone to obesity.

  3. Awesome! I'm getting a hamster in less then a month too! Its gonna be a dwarf hamster though.

    Tips:

Make sure the cage is large enough for your hammy to move around.

You need a wheel and a water bottle for it. Make sure the wheel isn't the one with the little strips of plastic to step on because that could hurt your hammy's feet.

You'll also need a place to put your hammy when your cleaning its cage.

You need bedding, don't use dust or wood shavings. Don't use cotton either. Maybe pieces of no colored ink paper.

Get some food too! You can buy food at a pet store like Petco or Petsmart.

When you get your hammy, make sure that its bottom is dry and that there isn't anything wrong with it. Get a hammy that doesn't get frightened too much and one that bites the less.

When you buy your hammy, leave it alone for 1-3 days, unless you need to feed it. Then come to the cage sometimes and talk to it when your feeding it. Make it get used to your voice. Then take some food and put it in the cage, not in the foodbowl, so it'll see that your feeding it, not hurting it. Then after a couple of days, give the food and leave your hand there, to see if the hammy will come get the food. After a couple of days then put the food in your hand and wait and see if the hammy will come and get it. If your hammy bites you then leave it alone for some hours to let it calm down.

So, thats some tips, hope i helped!

  4. if its preg take all the hamster even the father out

  5. Get a clear storage tub like this: http://www.geocities.com/tiff_king2/Indo...

    (But DON'T use hay!)

All you have to do is cut out most of the lid and cover it with some sort of screening or bars.

Make sure to put the cage in a cool place with no drafts. No matter how big the cage, you hamster should have out of the cage play time 3-5 times a week or more.

  6. Bethann gave excellent advice. She said what I would have. It is extremely important to keep your hamster dry. Therefore, I would NOT use an aquarium type of cage. They collect moisture.

  7. You should buy a hamster book first so you can check that you have everything hamster proofish. You don't want to make somthing youyr hamster can escape from.

  8. First of all, you should get one, not two, because when you aren't giving them attention, like when you're at work, school, or whatever- they play with each other and keep entertained.  It keeps them happy!  I bought all of my stuff from Petco- food, cage, bedding, etc. You need to make sure that the cage is REALLY secure because Hamsters are good at escaping, that's why I decided to buy a good cage from Petco.  I added on to the cage eventually to make it bigger.  You can get an aquarium for a very low price and then later if you decide to add on, you can buy a wire cage that goes on top of the aquarium.  Read a care book on Hamsters before you start actually buying or making things for them.  There are books you can check out at your library and also TONS of on-line info... If you're buying food and bedding from Petco or Petsmart, make sure that you check the ratings on line of all of the different products they have.

    Good Luck!

  9. I am getting a Syrian hamster at the end of Augest!! (when all of my vacation stuff is over with)

The best home made cage is a bin cage. I think that this link will be very helpful to you http://www.ehow.com/how_2101498_hamster-...

I think the most it will be is $10
