Yeangder Tournament Players Championship reduced to 54 holes after bad weather
On Friday morning, the organizers of the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship announced the suspension of the second round, after the Typhoon Sanba hit the area.
However, the players were not allowed to enter the field on Saturday either, as the inclement weather worsened the playing conditions at the Linkou International Golf and Country Club.
As a result, the tournament officials were forced to reduce the tournament to only three rounds.
According to the Asian Tour’s Tournament Director for the Yeangder TPC, Wanchai Meechai, safety of the players means everything for the management.
Therefore, the officials did not allow the players to enter the field, especially when there was a threat of strong winds with tall trees standing on their heads.
“The extremely wet and windy conditions made it a challenge for play to continue today. The safety of our players going out to the course was also another priority. As such, we have taken the decision to abandon play for today”.
He also confirmed that the second round will resume at 8:00am local time on Sunday. According to the weather forecast, the Typhoon is not expected to return to the area and the course will be ready for play on Sunday.
Moreover, he also stated that the tournament can be stretched to Monday, to allow all the players to complete their 54 holes.
“All players will return on Sunday morning 8am to complete their rounds where the forecast is for much calmer conditions. We are also not ruling out a Monday finish so that we can get all 54 holes played,” he said.
While talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, Koh Dengshan of Singapore said that he was expecting such weather conditions prior to coming to Taipei.
“This is expected of the weather in Taipei and before I came, I was already mentally prepared for these kinds of conditions,” he said.
Angelo Que of Philippines currently holds the clubhouse lead, thanks to his opening round score of a seven-under par 65.
Indian Gangajeet Bhullar and Jason Knutzon of the United States were sharing the second spot on the leaderboard when the storm hit the area on Friday.
