...to expand?

my major assignment topic for food and hospitality is:

to what extend does australia's pay structure for hospitality employees restrict the development of dining concepts?

i.e. should we introduce tipping so businesses can develope dining concepts.

has anyone been to richtrees market restaurant in canada? this type of concept wouldnt be economically viable in australia, but should we make it so it could be?

should i be choosing another topic?

:S

thanks

any ideas or advice appreciated.

  1. In the usa a large portion of waiters and waitresses income comes from tips because the minimum wage is too low. The restaurants do not want to raise minimum wage and abolish tips because this would lower their profit. They argue that tipping is incentive for better service. But thats BS. The restaurants just want to maximise profit by forcing their staff to rely on tips.

I have been to usa, and you do not get better, or even good dining service there. Good dining service relies on having a dining culture (something usa doesn't have) and experienced competent staff that have been fostered by this dining culture. It does not rely on tipping.

  2. I am from Canada.

The restaurants underpay and claim their staff earn tips to avoid paying even minimum wage.

To make it even worse many restaurants charge the watresses a tip fee.

If you don't tip at least 10% the watress actually loses money out of her pocket.

I firmly believe the money for the waitress should be included in the charge for my meal and that I should not be paying an extra for service.

I have never been to Richtree.

But it looks like a lot of other buffet style restarants that are in Toronto area.

Most of these operate as flat fee buffet restaurants and they do not expect or encourage tipping.

  3. Quick question are you from Australia, if so then you would know that the minimum wage in Australia is $14.40 an hour, which is also paid to restaurant workers not to mention time and a half or double pay for certian hours and days, although 1st yr apprentice chefs get a lot less around $260 a week, anyway I think in todays current market climate, with the interest rate being so high in Australia, if we were to introduce the 20% tip like in Canada, most Australians couldn't afford to eat out.

  4. Are you nut's? why should we have to pay out more money just to help the businesses make more profit? They will cut your wages next!
