  1. ambassadors make $100k+, while the average consular section worker makes about $30k. Then post differentials are figured. Depending on how crappy the place is you get paid more, also figures into the cost of living. For instance Romania's differential will be about 10%, its safe and the cost of living is low, while Pakistan is at about 30% because of perceieved threats and most of the UK is at 15% about for the cost of living. For instance, the base salary for a special agent with the bureau of diplomatic security is about $35k but they get LEAP pay that is given to all federal law enforcement agents, its about a 30% difference so they make a little over $50k to start. Then they are given a post differential when going overseas, so that would be around $65k. Even at a base pay you can expect to be paid quite well with any federal job, especially if it requires you to serve overseas.
