My GF got her tongue pierced last tuesday, the people said to stay away from yeast containing products, does anyone know if there are any brands of beer that do not contain yeast?

  1. all beers have yeast, but if you want to chance it...use a straw.

  2. Every beer is made with yeast, of course.

However, you are most likely to find yeast in beer if the beer is either homebrewed, or a hefeweizen.  It is hard to remove all the dead yeast in homebrew, and it is the style of hefeweizen to leave the yeast in to continually ferment.  Most lambics I believe are also like this.  And any beer that you know is "bottle conditioned" has yeast in it.

Otherwise, any other beer that isn't cloudy (hefeweizens are cloudy because that's the yeast!) should be yeast-free.

If you're not sure, there's always liquor, no yeast there.

  3. Most commercial beers are filtered to remove most of the yeast. However, there is no such thing as a yeast free beer because that is what cause the fermentation.

  4. Ther was a yeast free beer, non alcoholic, called Horehound, made from the herb of that name.Ask your Chemist.

  5. All beer is made with yeast of some sort - but your girlfriend should only be concerned with something containing living yeast cells.

She should definitely steer clear of anything that says "bottle-conditioned" as those beers contain living yeast.  Sierra Nevada, Chimay, Hefeweizen, or your friend's homemade beer are examples.  Even if a beer is not bottle-conditioned (i.e. it's carbonated artificially) it may still contain living yeast - especially if it's from a smaller brewery that does not filter rigorously.

Most canned or bottled "macro" beer (e.g. Coors, Budweiser, Miller, etc.) in the US is either pasteurized or sterile-filtered, meaning it contains virtually no live yeast.  I would say it is safe.  Draft beer - major brands or otherwise - is not pasteurized, nor is it filtered to the same degree.  Draft beer will usually contain some viable yeast cells.

Bottom line - go for canned or bottled beer from a major producer and she'll be okay.  Unfortunately this precludes a lot of characterful beers.  If you have a favorite brand and you are not sure about it, I'm sure you could call customer relations and ask them if the beer is sterile-filtered.
