Yeast infection AND antibiotics simultaneously?

I was on antibiotics WHILE I already had a yeast infection. Then came my period. Could these factors have caused me to have an even SEVER-ER yeast infection down there??

  1. I would call the OB/GYN about this. I experienced a similar situation and I had a yeast infection already and I was taking antibiotics also and the antibiotics really "wiped" my good bacteria and what happened was, since I didn't have any good bacteria left, was I had a secondary infection which is BV and I had to take antibiotics to kill the bacteria and also at the same time, I was given Gynazole-1 to battle the yeast. My doctor told me take probiotics supplements and food that contained probiotics to regain good bacteria back. I would call the OB/GYN.

  2. Absolutely.  While yeast are always present on the vaginal mucosa, they are kept from overgrowing by the bacteria that are also present.  The antibiotics kill off the bacteria, allowing the yeast to overgrow.  Add some nice fresh blood from your period, and the yeast can really take off.  Blood is a great source of nutrients, and we commonly mix it with meida when we try to grow bacteria from bodies.

  3. We all know the use of antibiotics can cause vaginal candidiasis and having to take them when you already have candidiasis can worsen the fungal infection.  Periods can help relieve some of the physical symptoms.  Blood doesn't feed yeast.

If you ever need an antibiotic in the future, ask about a secondary med to prevent the candidiasis.  You can still use Monostat for now and can use it even during your period.
