Question:

Yeast infection/vaginosis medication?

I'm being treated for both a yeast infection and vaginosis. For the yeast infection I'm taking Fluconazole tablets, and for the vaginosis I'm taking Metronidazole tablets. It feels like the itchiness has gotten worst since I started taking them, is this okay? Is it a "get worse before it gets better" situation/?

  1. I have been through this a bunch of times!  I have to tell you, the best combo is Diflucan, when I think you already have for the yeast infection.  Take one pill and then 3 days later take another.  You should only have to take 2.  But the best thing that I have found for bacteria vaginosis is a gel called clendise.  It is a gel that you insert one time only and as soon as you do, you actually feel the itching go away.  But yeah, it'll take the itching a few days to clear up with the meds your doc gave you.  But they'll still work, the effect just won't be right away.

    It'll get better though...promise!

  2. I've never heard of it getting worse before it gets better, but I'm not a doctor.  I do, however, know from first-hand experience that itching down there tends to get a lot worse at night time.  I'm not sure why.  But maybe you're just noticing worse itching in the evenings and it's actually getting better in the day.

I use hydrocortisone cream when I can't stand the old itch.  It works really well!

  3. i've been through this also, though my first 2 doctors misdiagnosed me with bacterial vaginosis and had me take metronidazole on 2 separate occasions. i was also given fluconazole and it says on the slip of paper they give you, that it can take up to 5 days for the yeast infection to clear up (unless it is resistant to the medication).

i believe the third doctor i saw told me that you need to take the fluconazole AFTER the metronidazole because metronidazole kills off certain naturally-occurring bacteria and could allow yeast (which is also naturally-occurring in your body) to grow out of control.

if you are still itching after five days from taking the fluconazole, buy some vagisil to relieve the itching and make another appointment to see a doctor.

    good luck!
