Question:

Yellow growth on budgies beak? Help may be dying?

We can't afford to take our budgie to the vet at the moment as Im about to have a baby and have lots of expenses - but we love our budgie and are very worried about her. We 'saved' her from the pet shop as she was being picked on by the others.

She has always had a yellowish growth on top of her beak and she has big dark watery eyes.

When we got her she had a lot of diarreah - she still poos a lot and it sticks to her bum but it is normal colour.

We thought she was breeding with our male budgie as she has been in the breeder box a lot but this morning we came out and she was lying in the food bowl all still. There is fresh food in there so she isn't starving unless the boy isn't letting her eat but he seems to - just normal budgie competitiveness.

She has always been very sleepy and gentle. If she dies I know we have given her a better life but Im sad and want to save her. I have put her near the heater now in a box to keep quite warm and tried to hand feet water and seed.

I thought maybe its a disease or it could possibly be bacteria in the cage as she poos so much and loves to scratch around and eat her poo lol.

Hubby is cleaning the cage now. The other bird is chipper as ever. Please help if you have any ideas

  1. i don't know about budgies, too much, but It doesn't seems like a good idea to let her dig around in her own poo. Try getting those cages with the wires and the trays. Also, scrape the wires as often as possible to keep in clean. You may want to house her by herself, too. In a seperate room, if possible. Err on the side of caution that whatever she has, may be contagious.

  2. I certainly hope you quarantined her from the male budgie(had in different area for at least 35 days). Put her in a different cage so it doesn't spread to the male. Please take her to the vet even if there is a bit of expense because it could be mites or scaly face but you need to be sure! If you want to, go to http://www.tailfeathernetwork.com/ as I have been there for over a year now and they have the BEST information ever(its a bird forum)
