Yesterday I practiced volleyball for about 3 1/2 hours. I did everything from serving to hitting to plain volleys. Well today when I woke up my hands were really soar and they are swollen. What causes this and how can I fix it? They didn't hurt yesterday when I was practicing? I use a Wilson rec ball if that has anything to do with it. It seems like that balls a lot harder then the balls we use at school? Hmm.. well anyways it would be nice if my hands would stop hurting so I could practice without hesitation again.

  1. your hands and arm became stiff after hitting so much.  it's natural.

  2. Ice them for 20 minutes off and on for several hours.  Also try some advil to help with the inflamation.

  3. Soreness is gonna happen. I've been playinig volleyball since I was in 4th grade and my hands still get sore after setting, hitting, serving, etc. If you aren't used to playing or haven't played in awhile it will take a few days for your muscles to get used to the new activity. Volleyball uses some different muscles in different ways than other sports or even everyday life so it's natural to get a little sore.

    Do lots of stretching.

Drink lots of water--it will help with the soreness

    Keep playing and working hard

Your soreness will work out the more you use the sore areas

If your soreness gets really painful you might want to take an ice bath or heart the really sore areas.

    Good luck!

  4. You should also try to work up to 3+ hours practice.  Even if you are young, that is too much.  (If I tried a 3 hour workout without working up to it, I would be sore for a month.)

kylee_kammler has a great idea about the volleyballs.  Using the Wilson rec ball for a long period of time caused your swelling and pain the next morning.  Shorten your practice time and improve your volleyball and you should be OK after that.

  5. well since you practiced for so long youre hangs felt like they got beat up its just like if you get a black eye its swollen and sore. take some benadril.... feel better

  6. Ice them for now.  15 on & 15 off.  Don't depend on over the counter drugs.  Your arms will get used to it as you progress.   VB is fun, don't give up this easily.

    Have fun Playing

I am having fun in Austin, TX right now.

  7. ou probably forgot 2 warm up b4 playing....^__^

  8. my fingers start to hurt really bad in my knuckles for a long time after i set...so it could just be that you're arms and hand aren't used to it if you hadn't played in a while, give it time, they'll get back to feeling better after they get used to the pressure and stuff again...

  9. i'm guessing they are also kind of weak and stiff. that kind of thing comes from muscle usage and snapping down on hitting. general soarness and swelling comes from hitting a ball hard repetitively, or a hard ball as the one you have. i would suggest switching up to an AVP tour outdoor ball for generall play. they're awesome. indoor, go tachikara, they're a little pricey but totally worth it.

Anyway, ice your hands a little, and try to grab things and use them, it will help circulation and healing.
