Whatever happened to separation of church and state? Shouldn't this get people who live more angry over this issue and the damaged it's causing the USA?Why are churches now getting involved with the illegals for? What do the churches have to gain from the illegals in the first place? Or are churches above the law now?

  1. Because it is a bigger social justice issue.  The working illegal immigrants (and yes, most are working) were essentially invited here.  For 20 years legal immigration did not keep up with the needs of the country and rather than fix the law, the country (the government and employers) choose to ignore the law.

Now in the xenophobic frenzy of immigration reform, the blame does not rest equally on the government, the employers and the immigrants as it should, it rests solely on the immigrants.  Rather than a solution that recognizes the realities on the ground, the only acceptable solution is deportation that makes the weakest pay and the other perpetrators get off Scott Free.  This is unjust.

The plan for limited amnesty, better immigration law to allow enough workers in, and better border control to stop the problem from continuing was right.  But it was shot down by the Xenophobes, and the poorest of the poor are paying the heaviest price because they are the weakest.  This is what Christians do - they protect the weak from injustice.

  2. This is what we call a "strawman argument".

The LDS church doesn't take a position on illegal immigration except that whatever solution is implemented should respect the humanity of all involved.

The LDS church does not take a position in political affairs and their neutrality is well-known in the media.

  3. Sorry Anon, everybody is allowed to have an opinion and act in accordance with that if the law allows it.  I live in Australia and the same thing is happening here.

I actually disagree with the rampantly pro-illegal immigrant stance of some churches, but they do have the right, at least at this point, to act as the legally can and see fit.

This fact does, in no manner at all, compromise the separation of church and state.

  4. The illegals are predominently catholic, and with the fall off of catholics in this country, the illegals are a welcome replenishment of their ranks.

  5. The Catholic church is also against these raids.  I don't think it has so much to do with the law as the young children who are the unfortunate victims.  Why should the children pay for the crimes of their parents?  They are suffering and no one is helping them improve their lot.  They shouldn't be breaking the law, but many churches see them as fleeing from an oppresive society.

This is not a black and white issue.  Border patrol is only half the solution.  I don't see any solutions on the Republican side on improving the lives of people in Mexico so they don't have to risk their lives coming here.

  6. You don't understand what is meant by the "separation of church and state." Churches are of course free to speak out on moral issues, as are private citizens. Separation of church and state does not mean that churches and church members are silenced and disenfranchised. It means that churches do not control the government, but they are still free to express their opinions, especially on moral issues. That's what democracy is all about.

  7. Are you dumb?

The only thing they said is that they hoped that leaders would remember the human element in the immigration issue.

Doesn't that sound like a "churchly" thing to do?

Seriously....They're not saying "let em all stay" and they're not saying "kick em all out".  They're saying "they're humans".

This is a really dumb question.

  8. There doing more than the republicans and democrats have done.
