Because my elderly dog (who is now deceased) had many accidents on carpet, and never being able to get smell out, I had to remove carpet and decided to refinish hardwood floors under. However most of the floor looks great but in the middle of hardwood floor, where I had always scrubed carpet and stupidly soaked carpet a few times the wood is black. here are my questions

1. How do I get the little bits of padding that stuck to the floor off (there is a TON)?

2. Will sanding take out all or most of the darkened wood that was wet?

3. Also is there such a thing as Scotchguard for hardwood floors? I have 3 big dogs and hate for them to tear up the floor.

Thanks!

  1. For the black spot call a floor re finisher and see what they say. For the little bits are they stuck? if so when you refinish them they will come out

  2. Actually clickety is totally correct..pet urine can and will actually eat and destroy the wood..this is not just the cleaners you have used..I have seen this many times being a 37 year experienced painter...That section of the floor must be cut out and replaced, then stained and finished to match the rest of the floor..

  3. If the darkened wood is that way due to pet urine, then it probably penetrated the fibers of the wood and that area will have to be replaced.

There is no such thing as Scotchguard for wood floors but non-yellowing clear Polyurethane will repel water, pet accidents etc. You have to put on 2 or 3 coats and it stinks to high heaven until it's dry but it works great.

As for tips on removing the stuck on padding bits, I haven't got a clue. It sounds like you're in for some tedious and tiring work on that job.

    Good luck!! : /
