Ying Luo, Yu Luo stun Meiliana, Greysia in epic pre quarter-final tussle – Australian Open Update
The female duo of China Ying Luo-Yu Luo made their cut into the quarter-finals by overpowering Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii in second round of Yonex Australian Open GP Gold on April 5, 2012.
Unseeded couple of Ying Luo-Yu Luo read a favourable margin of 15-21, 21-15 and 22-20 after exhausting three sets.
The epic tussle was certainly a tough test of mental and physical fitness for both teams as it prolonged to 69 minutes.
Chinese pair was not in the right frame of mind at the beginning and could not read their higher ranked opponents’ game in the opening set.
Fourth seeded couple of the event, Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii unleashed their attack straight away and placed a decent lead on the scoreboard in first half of the set.
They accelerated their pace after the one-minute break and left their rivals Ying Luo and Yu Luo far behind in score position.
Final score of 21-15 remained in the Indonesia’s favour.
The story was entirely different in the following game as the Chinese dazzled their rivals with an amazing performance.
Doubles experts, Ying Luo and Yu Luo displayed premium badminton skills throughout the second set. They pushed their challengers on the back foot with powerful smashes which fetched them ten crucial points.
Their three consecutive points turned last nail in the coffin and they buried the Indonesian couple with a significant margin of 21-15.
The decider became consequential as both teams were level with a 1-1 match score position. The third set kept swinging between the contestants as the spectators stayed glued to their chairs until the last shot was played.
World Number eight duo Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii was inches away from the victory as three times they reached at the game point position but all the Chinese couple Ying Luo-Yu Luo came in their way.
Finally, the match ended when the Chinese girls scored two consecutive points and sealed the victory with a tight, yet decisive score of 22-20.
This win paved their way to the quarter-finals and the prime Indonesian duo had to bid farewell to the Australian Open 2012.
