Yip Pui Yin paves path to Women’s Singles quarter-finals of 2012 London Olympics
Hong Kong’s Yip Pui Yin earned the right to be in the top eight Women’s Singles shuttlers of London Olympics as she outshined Pi Hongyan in pre quarter-finals at Wembley Arena on August 1, 2012.
This hard fought battle prolonged to three gruelling sets before ending with figures of 13-21, 21-12 and 21-16.
World Number 22 player Pui Yin came back from horrendous start and saved some honour by ruling the court in the ending two parts of the tussle.
Meanwhile, the French female campaigner took a great start but she could not go with same flow in crucial moments of the match and crashed out of the mega event.
The victorious shuttler is subjected to a tough trial as now she is scheduled to meet the third seeded Chinese player Li Xuerui in round of eight.
However, she will utilise her confidence which she has earned through an unbeatable run in London Games.
In the pre quarter-final round, Pui Yin played with great conviction and registered a splendid win despite slipping down in the opening set.
The opposing shuttler Pi Hongyan had a dream start as she claimed first match point with a notable lead in final margin.
She got into right momentum by dominating in couple of opening rallies and then maintained this rhythm all the way to mid-game break.
She gathered valuable points at steady pace in later part of the game and finished first set with 21-13 score on the board.
However, the Hong Kong campaigner managed to come out of her bad patch in following set and counter-balanced the situation with a striking knock.
Pui Yin, who is unseeded player in this tournament, showed transformed character after first set loss and brought the contest to right balance by registering a favourable total of 21-12 in second set.
She did not lose this touch in the decider and blew her challenger away with a gutsy performance.
In the beginning, Pi Hongyan resisted a bit but she could not withstand the intensive invasion for long and surrendered.
Pui Yin struck hard when it mattered and emerged as victor with convincing figure of 21-16.
