Yoan Pablo Hernandez wins with a unanimous decision over Steve Cunningham – Boxing news
Yoan Pablo Hernandez was able to defend his title against Steve Cunningham with a unanimous decision against Steven Cunningham.
The rematch between both the fighters saw the IBF cruiserweight champion successfully retaining his title on Saturday night in Frankfurt, Germany.
Since the start of the fight, Hernandez was in control of things. He was able to knock out Cunningham in the fourth round, but somehow the American managed to beat the count out and came back on his feet. Cunningham’s show of power was weak but exhibition
of his stamina was at par. He kept coming back even though he was getting it real hard from the champion. In the fifth, round, the Cuban champion tried to finish Cunningham off, but the challenger survived.
In fact, the end of the fifth round marked the comeback of Cunningham in the game since the following rounds got tougher for the title holder. Cunningham put up his best and did not let it go. However, it was pretty obvious by the end of the 5th round that
it’s a one sided fight and that Hernandez will win.
Hernandez won the title from Cunningham in October through a controversial split decision. This was Hernandez’s first ever title defence which he successfully executed to a success.
On his stubborn attitude, Hernandez asserted, “He really is a courageous boxer - you could see that. How he came back! I gave myself a bit of breathing space in the fourth round. I caught him again nicely in the 12th.”
Both the pugilists are tough enough to give a tough time to one another but this time it was Hernandez’s luck that was working its way out on Saturday night. In addition, Hernandez gained some points on getting two cuts on the head when both the fighters
collided into each other.
At the end of the fight, Hernandez bagged his 26th victory whereas Cunningham got his 4th defeat. As of now, Cunningham has 24 wins, 4 losses and 12 knockouts in his portfolio while Hernandez has 26 wins, 1 loss and 13 knockouts.
With such an enormous victory, Hernandez has made his mark in the industry and now plans to move on to fight other competitors.
