Yohanes Kevin outshines Toni Kurniawan in 2012 Pertamina Open Badminton Championships
Indonesia’s young but talented shuttler Yohanes Kevin Tirta performed exceptionally well in third round of Pertamina Open Badminton Championships and ensured his presence in fourth round on December 11, 2012.
He stamped the compatriot player Toni Kurniawan in a short-lived tussle which ended with decisive figures of 21-18 and 21-12.
Yohanes, who was underrated earlier in this Championship, proved his worth with an unbeatable run in the preliminary stages.
In third round match, he played with great precision and sealed a splendid straight-set victory. He set the ball rolling immediately in the beginning and maintained that momentum all the way to final moments.
The other Indonesian campaigner was no comparison to him as Toni failed to pocket even a single match point and crashed out in a disgraceful manner.
Yohanes took off in perfect manner and established an unassailable lead straight away in the beginning of first set.
He carried this flow in next couple of rallies and transformed his initial lead into a mountainous figure.
Toni Kurniawan could not lift the burden of this deficit and remained grounded until the half time.
On the other hand, Yohanes finished first half of the set with an indomitable total of 11 and then capitalised this advantage in latter part of the game.
Though, he lost grip for a short span of time in third quarter of the set but he did not take much time to reinstate his dominance. He struck hard when it mattered and claimed first set with a tight yet favourable margin of 21-18.
The following game was just a replay of previous one as both contenders were poles apart in terms of performance.
Toni could not come out of his rival’s influence whereas Yohanes dominated overall pace of the rallies throughout this set.
In first half of the set, he unleashed a series of masterly crafted strokes which fetched many valuable points.
Yohanes mounted pressure by registering an indomitable total of 11 and then doubled the impact after the interval.
He played with an authoritative approach and smacked his competitor with a staggering knock of 21-12.
Now he is scheduled to meet Imam Adi Kusuma in the fourth round of this national championship.
