Yonder Alonso shines as Cincinnati Reds defeat Florida Marlins 8-6 – MLB Update
Yonder Alonso drove in a tiebreaking double in the ninth inning on Tuesday, August 23 to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Florida Marlins 8-6 at Sun Life Stadium.
Driving in four runs coupled with a homer, Alonso put a fascinating performance in front of his fans and family during the exciting match.
This was the first ever start of Alonso at first base for the Cincinnati Reds. The fact that he was playing at his home ground added to his advantage. Add to it the fact that he was told by his manager and mother that he would do something great in the game.
"That's why he was out there," Baker said. "I told him he was going to play in front of his family. Usually guys play well in front of their families."
Even he admitted it himself. "It's funny because I went to dinner with my parents (Monday) and my mom told me that 'I have a feeling that you're going to have such a good game' and she's right about a lot of things," Alonso said. "She doesn't say that too
often so when she does say it I guess she blessed me."
Yonder Alonso started the game with a homer to right against Ricky Nolasco in the second inning, a homer that brought the Reds 1-0 lead which was only doubled by himself in the second with a single to centre.
Johnny Cueto, on the other hand, pitched good enough to maintain the ascendancy of the Reds on the game until the fifth inning when the Marlins formally opened their account of runs. Gregg Dobbs was the first one to hit a sacrifice fly to bring a run followed
by that of Omar Infante.
Once Infante levelled the score, Gaby Sanchez also had a single to give the Marlins a 3-2 lead. Emilio Bonifacio homered to take the Marlins lead to 5-2 by the end of the sixth inning against Sam LeCure.
Jay Bruce came back hard with a homer to right in the seventh as the Marlins lead was brought down to 5-4. It was Emilio Bonifacio who hit a sacrifice fly in the 8th to give the Marlins a seemingly safe 6-4 lead, something that Leo Nunez could
not maintain in the ninth.
While the game was apparently in the hands of the Florida Marlins by the end of the eighth inning, the Reds’ Dave Sappelt was the first to score a two-run double to level the score. That paved the way for Alonso’s big hit of the night, a two-run double that
gave the Reds an emphatic 8-6 lead.
Francisco Cordero threw a scoreless inning to wrap up the game with 8-6 victory for the Reds as the Marlins could not hold their nerves to capitalise on the initial lead they had.
