York Barbican Centre hosts UK Championship for next two seasons – Snooker News
UK Championship, which is snooker’s second most high-status event after the World Snooker Championship, returned to the York Barbican Centre after a five year absence. The event was held at the York in 2006 but after that it was moved to another venue.
Now, after getting such a tremendous response from the snooker fans of York, the snooker governing body, World Snooker has extended UK Championship’s stay at the city for the next two seasons.
Return of the UK Championship was welcomed by the snooker fans in York and they participated whole heartedly which made the association to take this decision. The former World Snooker Championship runner up, England’s Judd Trump was able to win the York-hosted
UK Championship after he defeated the Northern Irishman Mark Allen by the score line of 10-8 in the final.
Speaking to the media about the decision, Trump said, “I'm really pleased that the UK Championship is going back to York. I thought the atmosphere there last year was amazing and it helped inspire me to win the title. There are a lot of snooker fans in and
around York and I'm sure they'll be back this year to support the best players.”
The credit of taking the UK Championship back to York Barbican Centre really goes to the current World Snooker Chairman, Barry Hearn. He joined the organisation in 2009 and since then, under his chairmanship, the game has made enormous progress throughout
the world. He must be very happy with the decision as he was the one to initiate it.
He spoke to the World Snooker, “Our decision to take the UK Championship back to York last season was inspired. There is a huge amount of enthusiasm for snooker in York and the surrounding area and the top players love the Barbican. We're delighted to sign
this deal for the next two years and looking forward to December.”
The 2012 UK Championship will commence from December 1 and will finish on December 9 at its actual home, York Barbican Centre. UK Championship holds an important place in the World Snooker Calendar and after the World Snooker Championship, every potter dreams
to clinch the UK Championship title.
