  1. No problem - there's a footbridge halfway along the main station which connects to all platforms. Coming from the north you'll probably arrive in the platform by the booking office so you can easily check which platform your next train leaves from, then have a wander round to your hearts content. ! ! !

  2. York station is a great place to stop, you might get a glimpse of 'flying scotsman' enroute to scaboro',a bit more time,go across the bridge to the N.R.M

  3. You don't actually say where you are coming from and going to. If you are coming from the south or the north the train will arrive at one of the main through platforms. If from the north or Scarborough  it will be the platform where the exit is. If from the south, there is a very large 'island' platform which is linked to the exit by a footbridge, clearly marked. On this platform, facing the exit (which is across the tracks) are two 'bay' platforms. Trains from the south bay - behind the supplemental departure indicator - go to places like Sheffield. The bay at the other end is for trains on the Knaresborough/Harrogate route. Trains for Hull tend to leave from a bay beside the platform where trains from the north stop. The main departure/arrivals board is beside the main exit.

  4. York railway station is an architectural gem.

It is very easy to navigate, and the station announcers are very good, actually human, rather than the usual recording.

  5. Half an hour is only enough time to find out which platform your next train is on and make your way there!

  6. It's a beautiful station as a building but big.  Having said that it's not too complicated to get around (unlike, say Paddington).  You'll come into one of the main platforms and chances are you will stay on that one or cross a footbridge to the others.  As I don't know which platform you will need I can't be specific but as long as you have 10 mins or so, you'll be fine.  There are plenty of departure boards and members of staff - if in doubt, ask.  Generally people in Yorkshire are friendly!  Also if you have time to kill there's an Upper Crust by the main internal entrance.  You'll be fine.
