Question:

Yorkie puppy questions...thinking about buying one.?

I have researched previous questions about this popular breed of dog...and I still want to know...are these dogs good natured or are they yappy like some smaller breeds. I know each dog is different, but I had three poodles and all three loved to bark. Also, if there is no such thing as a teacup breed, how do I get one that I know will be small and yet be in good health? Also, if you bought one, how much did you pay? Need to get an idea. Thanks so much!

  1. Small dogs RARELY have good health. You're right, there is no such thing as a teacup dog breed, they are just runts that are poorly bread. If you want a Yorkie, you should try rescuing one first.

As for the yappy question, all dogs bark. It's kind of a dog thing. You can try your dog to stop barking on command but you cannot train a dog to never bark.

Remember that dogs are not an accessory and that dogs are living creatures that need love and attention. Dogs are not tools for you getting attention. Small dogs become sick easily and are prone to hereditary and physical diseases. Look up extended pallet and collapsing trachea. Those are two major disorders.

I hope you make the right decision and help stop backyard breeders and puppy mills who breed dogs too small.

  2. we got ours from a breeder "on sale" (about $1,000) because he was supposed to turn out to be a bigger sized yorkie... he turned out to be pretty small though!

anyways, as you said, all dogs are different. most small dogs however are usually pretty "barky". but they are still good natured. they aren't like cats where they only love one person.

i would highly recommend getting a yorkie.

to get a small one, try your pound or local animal shelter. or try a breeder.

  3. My best advice would be to buy from a good breeder.  You'll most likely spend more on the dog initially, but a good breeder will have had the parents tested for genetic disease, which will save you money in the long run.  A good breeder also only breeds dogs with good temperaments, which should have some influence over "incessant barking."  Still, make sure you meet the mother of the litter to see what she's like before deciding on a puppy.  Check the YTCA website for a list of good breeders.  Also check out the following site to make sure you know what to look for in a breeder.

Small in size but big in personality, the Yorkshire Terrier makes a feisty but loving companion. The most popular toy breed in the U.S., the "Yorkie" has won many fans with his devotion to his owners, his elegant looks, and his suitability to apartment living.
