Yorkshire vs Derbyshire – County Championship Division Two – Match Update - Yorkshire recover after slump
Steve Harmison helped Yorkshire recover against Derbyshire and reduce the away side to 135 for 7 in reply to their own below-par first innings total of 219 on the opening day of County Championship Division Two game, played at Queen's Park, Chesterfield, July 18, 2012.
A total of 17 wickets fell, most of which went down in the final two sessions of the day, as Harmison finally hit some County form to claim quick three wickets. After an erratic display in his opening spell, where he conceded 27 in three overs, he claimed the scalps of Wes Durston, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Arlen-Wainwright-c52641 in his second burst without conceding a run.
Despite being on top, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yorkshire-c867 had their own batting woes after being limited to 219 from a comfortable position at 175 for 3.
While the Division two top of the table clash had offered entertainment, the quality was far from encouraging. With both sides looking to make it to the first tier of English cricket, it was Yorkshire who would be the more satisfactory side after skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Phil-Jaques-c2182 decided to bat first.
The first partnership yielded 34, between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tim-Groenewald-c2670 in the space of four overs. Jonny Bairstow added a quick fire 27 and did the rescuing act for a while with his skipper, but was eventually cleaned up by Tony Palladino on the team score of 94.
Gareth Balance then partnered Jaques for a successful stand of 81, which had put Yorkshire firmly in command by the end of 39th over. However, all changed after that as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mark-Turner-c1911 and West Durston dismantled the batting side by claiming three scalps each.
Turner took his three in as many overs, while http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Steve-Harmison-c2576.
Derbyshire however, failed to take advantage of their early good work and displayed poor conviction in reply. The early damage was done by Moin http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Usman-Khawaja-c2729, while Harmison repaid the faith shown by his new club by collecting three before the close of play.
