Yorvit Torrealba shines as Texas Rangers defeat Seattle Mariners 12-5 to sweep series – MLB Update
Yorvit Torrealba put in a tremendous performance as he led the Texas Rangers to a 12-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, September 25 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
The Rangers swept the fascinating series which generated a large number of homers throughout.
Rangers and the Mariners piled on eight homers in the game and it was the second time the venue generated eight or more homers in an encounter. It was also a special day for Derek Holland as the Texas pitcher went to 16-5 in the season. Charlie Furbush,
on the other hand was not lucky as he picked up his tenth loss of the season.
The homers trail was ignited by Adrian Beltre. He smashed the first homer of the game in the bottom of the second against Furbush, towards the centre-field. With the Rangers 1-0 early on, the Mariners did not back down from the challenge. The young roster
provided a just reply in the third through Chris Gimenez. The stand-in catcher exploded into action with a homer to right centre-field as the score immediately changed to 1-1.
The Rangers were lit ablaze again as Ian Kinsler smashed a homer in the third. His shot provided two runs as Craig Gentry was awaiting a nod on first base. Kinsler’s knock got the club to 3-1. The inning however was not over as Josh Hamilton entered the
score sheet when Mike Napoli smashed a single to left-field to take the score to 4-1.
Mariners responded again but with not much aggression. Justin Smoak scored the second run of the game in the fourth when Italian, Alex Liddi smashed a two-run home-run to left-field. The score immediately moved to 4-3.
The teams remained quiet till the bottom of the fifth. Kinsler was walked by Furbush and he subsequently stole second and third base when Esteban German came on to bat. Unable to deal with the pressure, Furbush levied tension onto his club as Trayvon Robinson
fumbled in the field to concede a rare home-run to German and a run to Kinsler. The weird play got the Rangers to 6-3.
Seattle’s left-fielder Mike Carp was on the scoring sheet for the Mariners in the sixth when he smashed Darren O’Day for a home-run to right-field. With the gap down to two runs, Yorvit Torrealba came in to extend the lead to three runs again with a home-run
to left-field. The score had now turned to 7-4.
Things got worse for the Mariners in the bottom of the seventh as German and Beltre moved to third and second base, respectively after stealing bases on Chance Ruffin’s stint on the mound. The hurler walked Nelson Cruz to load the bases up. Torrealba then
entered the picture to punish the reliever as he smashed a grand slam towards left-field. The hard hit got the club four runs and an 11-4 score line.
By now, the problems had gotten the better of the Mariners. A fielding error in the eighth by Kyle Seager saw Kinsler run home off a single from Leonys Martin. The Rangers had done the damage and the Mariners were not able to counter the 12-4 score line.
Seager however repaid his team for the error when he smashed Merkin Valdez for a home-run in the last inning. The solo hit was not enough to save the club as the Mariners crashed out of the game 5-12.
