Yorvit Torrealba suspended in the VWL, Rangers mull action in MLB – MLB Update
The Venezuelan Winter League has reportedly suspended Texas Rangers’ catcher, Yorvit Torrealba for 66 games, for hitting an umpire. The incident had occurred recently when after an argument, the catcher hit an umpire in the mask.
The suspension of the player will undeniably create a huge problem for the Texas Rangers in the Major League as well, as they do not currently have an experienced catcher as Torrealba in the side apart from Napoli. With the availability of Mike Napoli alone
in the side, the Rangers seem to have much to ponder over.
The suspension in the Venezuelan Winter League will render him from appearing in the remaining games along with the next season, which will indeed be a big blow to the player. He has an average of .260 average with the 309 RBIs to his credit, having had
52 home runs in the 782 games that he has played so far with a .390 SLG.
For now, the catcher has extended an apology for the incident that took place. This comes amid the concerns that the Major League Baseball may also consider some suspension for the Texas Rangers’ player following the step of the Venezuelan Winter League.
“I wanted to express my sincere apologies to all parties for my actions during the Venezuelan Winter League game on Friday,” Torrealba said. “I have extended an apology to the Rangers organization as well. I am embarrassed for my conduct, and personally
relayed that feeling to the umpire after that night's game.”
“On the field, I strive to be an example for children, especially those in my native Venezuela, and I regret my actions. I understand the reactions to the incident and will make every effort to set a positive example in the future.”
The carefully worded apology which manifestly carried the expression of regret that the catcher has, may help avert any potential action from Major League Baseball. Nonetheless, what is clear is that the Rangers would try their best to seek some softening
of a stance from the Major League.
