Yoshihito Nishioka beats Ronnie Schneider in the opener of Boys’ Singles – US Open 2012
Japanese player, Yoshihito Nishioka, toppled Ronnie Schneider of USA in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 in the first round of the Boys’ singles event at the US Open in New York on Monday.
Nishioka took lead from the start of the match, as he broke the American contender in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Though, Schneider struck back in the very next one and held his following serve to equalise the score at
2-2. The Japanese contestant made another breakthrough in the eighth to go up 5-3 but he could not close out in the ninth game, taking the score to 4-5. Serving to stay in the set at that moment, Schneider could not hold and lost 4-6.
The Japanese player banged in a single ace and committed the same number of double fault in the first set, keeping the first serve percentage at 59 and winning 11 of the 23 points on them. The right-hander converted all the three
break points he received and saved four of the six he faced.
Nishioka and Schneider started the second set by holding their opening serves to square off the score at 1-1. The American player fared flawlessly after that, breaking his opponent three times and capturing five games in a row
to seal it 6-1.
Schneider hit one ace and did not make any double fault in the second set. The American contender maintained a first serve percentage of 53 and converted seven of the 10 of them into points. Schneider also did well on returns,
securing 15 of the 23 to keep its percentage at 65.
Nishioka adjusted his game and struck in the opening game of the third set to attain a 1-0 advantage but he could not consolidate on it, levelling the score at 1-1. However, the Japanese player did the same with his opponent what
he had done with him in the previous set. He did not allow Schneider to claim even a single game after that, bagging five back to back to win 6-1.
The 16-year-old smacked a single ace and 81 percent of the first serves, pocketing 11 of the 18 points on them. The Japanese contender availed four of the five break opportunities he created and put away one of the two he came
across in the final set.
Nishioka will take on the 12th seed, Joshua Ward Hibbert of Great Britain, in the second round.
