Yoshihito Nishioka defeats Gianluigi Quinzi in the quarter-finals – Boys Singles US Open 2012
Third seed, Gianluigi Quinzi, received a straight sets shocker at the hands of the Japanese participant Yoshihito Nishioka in the quarter-finals of the US Open Championships 2012, held at the hard courts of New
York on Friday.
The 16-year-old Italian junior drew the first blood in the series and marked his 2-1 lead at the end of the third game. However, the Japanese took note of his rival’s success and evened out the scores to 2-all
in the fourth game. On the other hand, both players were not ready to gift away the match to the other opponent and put forward a tough battle by breaking each other’s serves on regular intervals in the opener. The score line got up to 6-6 by the end of the
set and Italian contender emerged to the front line by marking his win by 7-6(7) in the rie-break.
The second set reversed the winning sequence, repeating a similar format but in the other way round this time. Nishioka maintained a steady serve the entire time in the set, successfully gliding forward without
facing any hindrance and getting into the driving seat. However, the Italian participant struggled hard to sustain his previous momentum, equalizing the scores at 2-all in the fourth game and 3-all in the sixth game. The 16-year-old Japanese then encountered
his rival with a more proactive approach to clinch the set with a 6-3 win.
The deciding set clearly showed Quinzi losing his confidence, as he was unable to retain even a single serve the entire time. On the other hand, Nishioka gleefully progressed forward without facing any break
in his serves and secured a 6-0 win.
The Japanese had a 54 percent first serve accuracy but he exhibited his excellent game plan by securing all the seven points offered to him. In comparison to that, the Italian challenger had a 40 percent first
serve and could not win more than two points out of six.
Next Nishioka will contest against the second seeded Canadian Filip Peliwo for the semi-finals of the Grand Slam. He rallied past the Australian Nick Kyrgios, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
