Yossi Benayoun faces several months out
Chelsea and Israel midfielder Yossi Benayoun faces several months out of the game after tearing his Achilles tendon while on international duty for Israel.
Benayoun has been carrying an Achilles problem since the start of the season. Chelsea medical staff have been monitoring the problem, which flared up as the player trained for Israel's Europe 2012 qualifying
match with Croatia.
"I arrived with hope of helping the national team but unfortunately this is not a simple injury an additional test
will reveal what needs to be done," said the player.
The news will be a blow because Benayoun is a top quality player. However, Chelsea has been playing without him in recent times because of a seperate calf injury he picked up
during the Carling Cup defeat by Newcastle United.
A big blow
This will be a big blow to Chelsea because the player was just coming back from the calf strain. He is very comfortable in possession of a football, which fits in with the way
Carlo Ancelotti likes to play football.
Chelsea delayed surgery on Benayoun's Achilles problem at the start of the season because they wanted to use him in Premier League games. This surgery will now be forced but
it leaves Chelsea without a versatile player who can play all over the midfield.
This will not be an easy injury to recover from. The Achilles tendon has to take a lot of weight and pressure every time a person stands up. Benayoun will be out until long after
the New Year.
The club is going to have to put in extra effort to make sure the player isn't mentally affected by this latest problem. Benayoun would have been buzzing after recovering from
the calf problem, only for an older problem to come back.
Betting advice
Chelsea has already played a lot of games without Benayoun in the side. There is no reason to change any betting patterns related to Chelsea. The likes of Didier Drogba and Florent
Malouda are still the best players to back in the team.
