Yossi Benayoun lays blame with Chelsea doctors for lengthy absence
Chelsea winger Yossi Benayoun has criticised the club’s doctors for failing to spot his Achilles injury early enough, claiming it has led to his lengthy six month lay-off.
The Israeli stated: “I had three MRI scans and three ultrasounds under the Chelsea doctors and they all said that there was no problem, and it was just a small tear. So I went over to
Israel ready to play and they told me it was a big tear. Chelsea were sure it was something small. They have compared all the images and they do not understand how they missed it."
The former Liverpool man is undoubtedly frustrated with his situation, having only just made the move to Stamford Bridge in the summer hoping to make his mark on the first team as soon
as possible. However, he’ll now have to wait until the final few months of the season in order to prove his worth, and help Chelsea achieve their season’s objectives. It’ll come as a big blow to Chelsea too, as Benayoun was a direct replacement for Joe Cole,
who left for free to Benayoun’s old club Liverpool. The Israeli was seen as an impact player for Carlo Ancelotti to use when he needed an extra dimension, or that bit of quality in and around the penalty area that might unlock a defence.
It now leaves the Italian tactician a little short, having to place more faith in the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Yuri Zhirkov and Salomon Kalou – all of whom have the quality to be a major
asset, but perhaps haven’t done so on a consistent enough basis. But as Benayoun rightly states, he should return for the business end of the season, where things will be really heating up on the titles front: "I hope Chelsea have a successful season so I
can come back and help win trophies in the final weeks."
