It is an acoustic leviation chamber.

How would I make one of these (note i have a fair amount of resources, money not so much (maybe 300$ budget).

  1. This isn't faked. There were a couple of guys in my 4th year physics lab who did this as their project. It was pretty cool. Unfortunately I don't know the details of how it worked. From what I can figure out they used speakers to set up standing waves in a box and then placed the balls at the nodes of the waves.

I read an article about this on howstuffworks a couple weeks back.  You need a very powerful transducer and an equally powerful amplifier to power the transducer.  The basic idea is to create a standing wave between the transducer and a reflector directly above the transducer.  Within this standing wave there are regions of high and low pressure. you would then place an object in between a high and low pressure region. This will make the pressure on the bottom of the object lower than the pressure on top of the object resulting in an upward force.  The frequency of the signal to the transducer depends on the size of the object. The wavelength must be a few times larger than that of the diameter of the object.
