Question:

You People Who Use Blackle and Others To Whom Are Green!!?

Some people who don't seem to be technologically savvy seem to think that blackle actually saves energy. Do they realize that the computer still projects light? It's not like the computer has shut down part of the screen to save energy. What do you think? Do you think that perhaps even though it doesn't save energy, it's still a symbol or a statement of telling people to be green?

  1. It won't save heaps but its a start. Personally I use my own Google at "http://biogoogle.net" this site's servers run on solar power. Try it out.

  2. Well, a black screen takes less energy to render than a white one.  That's fact.  Sure the monitor is still on and warm.  It's still consuming less energy.  I don't personally use Blackle much.  I do consider myself green though.  Funny how being green can be a social statement, a poitical statement, or a fashion statement these days.

  3. well u have a point on one thing. Blackle save next to no energy ONLY on a LCD screen though.  If you use a CRT monitor for the site then yes u would then save about 25% using that site compared to google.  But I think the vast majority of the people use LCDs now so I would suggest this site whos operations are all carbon neutral.  http://www.biogoogle.net/

    great question though.

  4. I think it's an interesting and jarring reminder about saving energy. Sure, you're not actually going to save a measurable amount unless you have a giant CRT monitor, but it does get people asking questions. As an education tool, it's not a bad idea.
