Do you believe that EU citizens possess a common, homogenous European identity and identification with the EU? Why or why not? How are relationships between the different levels of identity in the EU theorized?

  1. No they don't. Most Europeans identify with their nation state first and some the EU second and of that group half probably a distant second but a large group totally doesn't identify with the EU.

The EU is very much seen as a cooperation between separate states and the enlargement has only increased that sentiment. There are some European idealists but they really are a small minority

  2. Integration is another political issue, where the public view is sometimes that national interest conflicts with that of the EU. The aim of increasing harmonisation between states has meant that national powers have been transferred to the European level. This is criticised by eurosceptics who fear the loss of national sovereignty.  In 2004 the European Constitution was agreed between national leaders and the EU institutions. However it did not come into force after it was rejected in referenda in two countries, with the prospect of further rejections had attempts at ratification continued. In October 2007 European leaders finalised a new Treaty of Lisbon which contains much of the now defunct constitution, without the latter's constitutional terms and elements.

  3. Well no, but there isn't such a thing as a common homogeneous American, Irish, English or French identity.  There are certain values which maybe common in a country or in this case a political union.

The main values that are promoted by the EU are the member countries views on Human Rights, which is vastly homogeneous on the continent then everything else is degrees of difference.
