  1. You only have 8 oz of liquid.  You can't divide it so you have 4 oz in each of the 3 glasses.  You also can't put 4 oz of liquid in a 3 oz glass.  I think you left out some of the information.

  2. 1. Fill the 5 oz glass with water from the 8 oz glass

result: 8 oz glass contains 3 oz and with 5 oz glass contains 5 oz

    2. Pour the water from the 5 oz glass into the 3 oz glass

result: 8 oz glass contains 3 oz, the 5 oz glass contains 2 oz and the 3 oz Glass contains 3 oz

    3. Pour thee water from the 3 oz glass into the 8 oz glass

result: 8 oz glass contains 6 oz of water and the 5 oz glass contains 2 oz of water

    4. Pour the water from the 8 oz glass into the 5 oz glass

Result: the 8 oz glass contains 1 oz water, the 5 oz glass contains 5 oz of water and th 3 oz glass contains 2 oz water.

    5. Pour the water from the 5 oz glass into the 3 oz glass

Result: the 8 oz glass contains 1 oz water, the 5 oz glass contains 4 oz of water and the 3 oz glass contains 3 oz water.

    6. Pour the water from the 3 oz glass into the 8 oz glass

Final Result:  The 8 oz glass and the 5 oz glass both contain 4 oz water and the 3 oz glass is empty.

  3. 1) Start with 8 oz, 0 oz, 0 oz (8-0-0)

    2) Fill the 3 oz from the 8 oz  (5-0-3)

    3) Empty the 3 oz into the 5 oz (5-3-0)

    4) Fill the 3 oz from the 8 oz (2-3-3)

    5) Fill the 5 oz from the 3 oz (2-5-1)

    6) Empty the 5 oz into the 8 oz (7-0-1)

    7) Empty the 3 oz into the 5 oz (7-1-0)

    8) Fill the 3 oz from the 8 oz (4-1-3)

    9) Empty the 3 oz into the 5 oz (4-4-0)

You now have 4 ounces in the 8 ounce glass, and 4 in the 5 ounce glass!

    Hope this helps!

  4. hmmmm...... You can't get 4 oz. in each because the 3.oz galss can't fit 4oz in it

  5. You can't because you have 8 ounces, and 8/3 is not 4. Plus, 4 goes into 8 twice, so there can only be 2 glasses. Also, 3oz. wouldn't hold 4oz.

  6. well... if you think about it... you put four in five and you have one left so 5-4=1 and 3+1=4 so with the one left over you add it to the three and then you have four =D

  7. so you want to get 4 oz in each of the 3 glasses...um...you can't because 4 oz of anything will not fit in a 3 oz glass

  8. Fewer steps...

Start with 8,0,0 (amount in the three glasses, large to small)

    1 Fill the 5 oz. (3,5,0)

    2. Fill the 3 oz from the 5 oz. (3,2,3)

    3. Put the 3 oz back into the 8 oz. (6,2,0)

    4. Put the 5 oz into the 3 oz (6,0,2)

    5. Fill the 5 oz. (1,5,2)

    6. Fill the 3 oz from the 5 oz. (1,4,3)

    7. Put the 3 oz back into the 8 oz. (4,4,0)

Note:  Deb's answer is identical to mine except that she left out step 4.  The water moved from the 5oz to the 3oz glass by itself.

  9. You can't fit 4 oz. in each glass, as people have pointed out.  I think the question you meant ask is, "How do you measure out 4 oz. of liquid?"

    Here's how:

    1) Fill the 5 oz. glass.

    2) From the full 5 oz. glass, pour as much as you can into the 3 oz. glass.  This will leave 2 oz. in the 5 oz. glass.

    3) Transfer that 2 oz. into the 8 oz. glass.

    4) Fill the 5 oz. glass again, and again fill the 3 oz. glass from it, leaving 2 oz. in the 5 oz. glass.

    5) Add the 2 oz. in the 5 oz. glass to the 2 oz. that's in the 8 oz. glass, and you've measured out 4 oz. of liquid.

EDIT: my solution assumes you can re-fill from another source.  If you are limited to just the original liquid from the 8 oz. glass then Chuck B. is more correct.  Nice work.
