I really can't answer that.  What a peculiar question.  Any person who can viciously harm another must be hurting inside so either way my child would have suffered.    I suppose if he was the perpetrator he would still be alive which means there is always hope, but it could mean his hurt would go on and on.  Even after he had served his sentence he would still have to live with the knowledge of what he had done.  

If he was the victim, then at least his suffering would, hopefully, have been short-lived.

I wouldnt want them to be involved in either!

If they perpetrated one I would think I had failed in bringing them up to know what was right and wrong.

If they were the victim then I would be upset that I wasnt there for them.
