The idea of standardising things across Europe is a good thing, I think.

However I really hope the EU isn't thinking about standardising democracy, because people will not stand for that.

I can see how some of the poorer countries need help with their government systems, but majour countries like UK and France already have good systems.

Why fix something that isn't broke, and cause uproar in the process.

EU is d**n awesome. I dunno why people hate it so much. A group hug of a bunch of friendly nations with common goals and aspirations.

Their democracy is freer than the US system as well. If the people don't like the directive that has been passed, they can choose to overturn it via referendum vote. Can you do that?

They are about to say "NO", but the EU often ignore democracy when it doesn't suit them; and might press on with implementing the Treaty anyway.

You don't seem to fully understand the Lisbon Treaty, it will not expand the powers of the European Commision over its member states very much. Mostly its  a series of economic agreements designed to better facilitate the expansion of the EU in the next 5-10 years. It won't make a huge difference to anyone in Europe. The Accession States will benefit economically from stronger ties to stronger economies, but that has little to do with Lisbon.
