You know how to save water?

I was in the shower and thinking that most people actually take a shower every single day. If your shower head sprays out 2.5 gallons per minute and you took a 15 minute shower. That would be 37.5 Gallons per day. That would be 262.5 gallons per week and 1050 gallons per month. If you cut your showers down to 2 a week you would be saving 750 gallons a month and if you had a family of 4 who cut down you would be saving 3,000 gallons a month.

What would be so bad about taking a show Sunday night and Wednesday night? (I guess if you worked in construction it would be ok to take a 5 minute shower every Monday thru Friday) Me, I take a shower once a week, but I am a stay at home mom and I don't sweat.

  1. Sadly, there are many fussy people out there who shower multiple times daily. I'm a medic stationed in Iraq-- A DESSERT-- and there are many soldiers here who shower twice daily, profusely using up water that was trucked in by local contractors risking their lives delivering their load of H20 along roads infested with hidden explosives. Also, there're people who let the water run while brushing their teeth and shaving. We Americans are very wasteful, in a theater of war, and at home in the states.

Anyway, using water aerators, one-gallon-per-flush toilets, and rainwater recovery tanks to water one's yard, anyone can save lots of water.... it's a no-brainer.

  2. Low flow shower head replacements are a great idea -  they increase water pressure and reduce output significantly.  And 15 minutes is too long for a shower - at least it is for me since I do not have long hair.  Don't shave in the shower nor do other things which you need not do in the shower.

  3. If you start with a basin, soap and wash cloth, a litre of water is enough to get you moderately clean, and a second litre of water is enough to do the rest.

Then, if the water you just used goes onto the ground and soaks down to tjhe aquifer from which it was originally pumped, you have used almost no water and got clean.

If however you used all the water you wanted to bathe drawn from your aquifer, and returned it to the same aquifer, you still have used almost no water, but you have used the energy used to pump it and spray it on your skin.

The real waste of water is to send your bath water down the sewer and into a sewage treatment facility.

Our primary problem is not using too much water but disposing of it in such wasteful ways, polluting it with our f***s and industrial debris. We still have megatons of water going into the oceans down our rivers because we have made that water unusable. We can barely imagine trying to recover that water.

  4. water that we use should be processed and returned back into water we can use again.

  5. actually even tho this seems nice, practicaallly it is quite weak.

we cant stay without taking a shower!!!!

i mean personal ccleanlines is very important. if u want wre can minimise the amount.

  6. We use a timer.  We set it for 4 minutes.  When it goes off we have one minute to rinse and turn off the water.  This is especially useful with kids.

Also, many women shave in the shower this is a huge water waster.  Turn off the water when shaving.  Sometimes I plug the drain for the first couple minutes of my shower and then use that water to rinse the razor or sometimes just use a bucket of water and sit on the edge.

  7. EVERY DROP, DO NOT WASTE, OTHEWISE OUR CHILDREN WILL CURSE US.....

  8. but you can just take 5 minute showers on weekdays and do without a shower on fridays and saturdays.

  9. I'd imagine the simplest solution to conserving water during showers is to not keep the water on the whole time! Get yourself and a loofa wet first, then turn the water off. Apply 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner to your hair because that means less rinsing. Then put soap on the loofa and wash yourself. The water was off the entire time you did this, so turn it back on. With both the soap and shampoo/conditioner on at once, you only need one rinsing session.

Turning the water off while brushing your teeth can conserve water, too. For hygiene, water is mostly important for rinsing. I agree that many people don't need to shower daily. I also think it's great that you're thinking about this issue! Good luck on finding a solution.

  13. wow a stay at home mom that doesn't sweat you must have angels for kids i know ours kept us going and the 5 minute showers we took was our only break other ways to save water is having the suds saver function on the washing machine my moms had this 30 years ago try and find one now front load machines save water, use rain barrel to collect water for your plants wash dishes in the sink instead of the dishwasher, wash clothes in cold water {cold water Tide}energy saver DONT water your lawn what a waste

  14. I sweat too much.  I can do with a shower every other day, but not only 2 days a week.  Another water saver I like is taking a bath, and then putting a pump into the bath and sticking the hose out the bathroom window to water the lawn.  We did that for a while when our county was on water restrictions.  The soap in the water did not seem to affect the grass.

  15. thats a good idea!! also if u have a drip you should fix it just the drip uses more water than a shower. i take a shower every other day. and also using low flow shower heads help 2
