  1. This is the correct quote:

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Voltaire, (Attributed); originated in "The Friends of Voltaire", published 1906, by S. G. Tallentyre

and a similar one from a letter:

Monsieur l'abbé, I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write.

Voltaire, letter to M. le Riche, February 6, 1770

  2. these words are said by mr venkatswamy padman..

    the great philosopher...

    lol

  3. that is very confusing......

u must have told them yourself

  4. Nobody you are paraphrasing.

  5. Voltaire.. sort of.

I always thought it was "I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

    and Wikipedia has it as:

"I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write."

The second one sounds too wordy, and less 'Voltaire-ish' to me, but that is totally irrelevant, and who am I etc etc!

BUT... actually, although it absolutely reflects his philosophy, and for sure he must have said something very like it ~ that particular quote is apocryphal, as they say ~  it has never been found in any of his writings. Those words were 'put in his mouth'  by the author (S.G. Tallentyre) of a biography she wrote about him, and that  makes saying which quote is the 'real' one impossible.(dammit)

Voltaire was frequently horrified by many of the injustices he saw in France during his life; (1694-1778) and the lack of freedom of speech was a biggie for him, since he had SO much to say. He wrote dozens of little pamphlets (unsigned, to prevent getting thrown in the Bastille) which were circulated everywhere, and in which he gave vent, (often wittily and sarcastically) to his extremely strong opinions on many subjects.

And... last thing.. he was responsible for the quotation "The pen is mightier than the sword."

Wow, that was probably waaaaay more info than you wanted or needed, but Voltaire himself was so brilliantly fascinating a man,  it's hard to just stop at his name!

Hope it helps a little, anyway.
