  1. It's been a long time since I went to high school, but I would think that as long as you keep your grades up and have an acceptable score on the SAT, that it shouldn't matter.

  2. There have been some great responses in the post.

I will add that there is a renewed emphasis on "transition plans"  in Special Education.

The Transition Plan focuses on what the student wants to do after school and how they are going to do it. There is a specific plan outlined and personnel from outside agencies are sometimes invited. It might be you ask for a representative through Vocational Rehabilitation come to a meeting with you, your teacher, your parents and your guidance counselor and help you find a good match for college program with services in place to support you academically and help you be successful.

You'll do the work in college but tutoring services might be available for free to give you some extra help as you need it. Tutoring services is just one example of many types of services that might be available, that's why a voc rehab specialist is great, it's there specialty to help you through the process.

Check into Transition Plans at your school with a special educations teacher. I bet they'd be willing to help.

    Good luck to you

  3. Yes, special education does effect what you do but it does not prevent you from doing what you want. You should have an IEP and the future goals should relate that you intend to go to college.  Your IEP goals and objectives should be written to help you meet this goal.  If you need accommodations in college, research what colleges are best for meeting your needs.   You can go to college but everyone that plans to go on to college must prepare.

  4. If you qualify for and need special education services, then by all means get them!  It will not effect whether or not you go to college, but it will be difficult, if not impossible, to get accomodations in college if you did not get them in high school.

  5. It is very beneficial for a student who has some kind of qualifying condition to be identified and on an IEP before entering college.  Many very good schools continue to provide some kind of additional help -- extra time to take tests, tutors, advisors -- to students who were on an IEP in high school.

Keep your eye on making your goals.  Do well in high school and accept help when it's beneficial.  Push yourself to work as hard as any other student.

A former special ed student from a junior high I worked at is now getting his master's degree.  You can go as far as you are willing to work.

  6. No it doesn't affect you at all.  I have ADD and LD and SID and I went to college, a small school that had a program for students who needed special education.  I spent 5 years in college because I switched majors and I ended up graduating with Honors.  If you have a Learning Disability or are Special Education don't let that stop you from going to college, even if people tell you that you won't make it.

Also some colleges that have special education programs for students who need extra help wave the SATs and some accept ACT.

Make sure though that if you do decide to go to college you have a record of all your IEP's and all your Diagnoses for what you have, most programs for students with special needs, require you have that information to give to them.

    College is worth it.
