Question:

Young African Grey hates being in her cage?

Just recently my family bought a young, hand-reared African Grey from a local breeder. It's (s*x still unknown) about 3-4 months old.

She appears to despise being in her cage, which is very large and also has a fair amount of toys to keep her busy. My parents say I have 'spoiled' her by letting her out of her cage too much. Now, when she's in her cage, she'll more than likely be found sitting on the bottom, just sitting there looking pitiful. She used to be quite comfortable before, and even started playing with her new toys. Do any previous or current owners have any suggestions? I'm really worried...I really just want her to be happy. I'm also starting to think that when she's in her cage she's so busy thinking about wanting to not be in there, that she probably isn't eating or drinking. She just sits there and only seems to perk up when we pass by her cage because she thinks she's about to be let out.

Any suggestions from previous/current owners would be MUCH appreciated.

  1. It you only pay attention to her when she's out of the cage, it's no wonder she doesn't like the cage.  Try playing with her in or on her cage.  Pet her, give her treats, tickle her, talk to her, and just generally pay attention to her while she's on her cage.
