Young Ko off to a flying start at major battle
Things have just gone like many believed they would for young amateur Lydia Ko, but her first LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) triumph at the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012 has given her enough confidence to keep surprising her fans.
Ko is in the roster of Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012, a major tournament on both the LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour (LET), but what has caught her fans by surprise, is a good start that she made at the prestigious tournament.
Ko, who hails from New Zealand and is just 15 years old, fired a 72 in the opening round, gaining a good position on the leaderboard.
Although happy with her performance in an event featuring some of the most formidable LPGA contenders, young prodigy said that she did not face much trouble playing on Thursday, but the course seemed to be a bit tougher.
Ko shared that the Royal Liverpool Golf Club is “one of the hardest golf courses” she has ever played.
When asked what it felt like to play the major event, the Kiwi amateur said that she is quite excited to play among big names, but the pressure is definitely enormous.
“I would kind of expect that because it is a major. I mean, it was really tough but shooting even par, it's not a bad round and I think it's a pretty good start. I could have reduced a few bogeys, but I mean, save them up for tomorrow,” Ko said.
Ko went on to say that her fans and spectators have pinned their hopes on her, wanting her to surprise them once again, like she did at the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012. She said that winning at a major event is always an uphill task, as players usually put in their maximum effort to win.
“I think some people say that I should be able to win again, but I mean, you never know. You could be playing good the day before and not so good the day after, and I think that's all about golf, you play every shot and every round,” Ko stated.
Lydia Ko recently became the youngest player ever to win an LPGA event after she grabbed a three-shot victory at CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012.
