Question:

Young Persons Railcard at Arriva train/bus in Manchester and NE Wales?

My girl, aged 14, will go to stay in N-E Wales for boarding school next term as an overseas pupil. Then, she will always travel by Arriva bus and train in the regions of Manchester and NE Wales. Can she automatically enjoy the student fare, i.e. half-price? I learned that there is a Young Persons Railcard. Is she required to apply for one? According to gmpte, a young person, even under 16 had to apply for a card issued by it for the eligibility for discount in fare. Where and how to apply? Is it a must. Thankyou

  1. be careful with trains in north east wales their bus replacements are a bit unreliable.

  2. I live in manchester and have children aged 14 and 16..

You will only need to obtain a  young persons proof of age card if your girl is under 16 but looks older..

1 passport sized photograph is required, and usually a form to be filled in and countersigned by a school-teacher etc.

GMPTE issues them at their offices in bus stations so do most local schools.

But any "official" proof of age card issued by any local authority will do.

All children under the age of 16 in the UK get dicounted travel..On trains that is a 50% discount and bus companies set their own levels of discount in different ways, this ranges from a fixed discounted fare to no more than 50% of the adult fare.

Once a child becomes 16 years of age..to travel by rail they must purchase a "young persons discount card".

In this instance they will need 2 passport sized photgraphs,a form to be filled and countersigned and a method of payment.
