Young emerging players in the Premier League: Jack Wilshere, Greg Cunningham, Fabian Delph & David Hoilett
As the 2010-11 Premier League season is about to start, there is once again a crop of young players in the English game that are eager to make their mark this season. Last season, players like Adam Johnson, Jordan Henderson and Jack Rodwell made their name as the bright young players in the league. Let’s take a look at some of the promising young players of the EPL this season:
Jack Wilshere, Arsenal
Jack Wilshere has long been touted as one of the best young players to come up from the English ranks. When he was signed by Arsenal there were high hopes, but he did not get much first team action in the first half of the season. In January, Arsene Wenger decided to loan him off so that he can gain some experience and first team football. The 21 year old had a very successful spell at Bolton Wanderers and impressed one and all. Bolton wanted to keep the player for longer but Wenger decided to bring him back and try him out in the first team this season. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has long been a believer in young talent and sticking with his policy of grooming young players instead of buying big names.
Greg Cunningham, Manchester City
Greg Cunningham is also a man who has not been able to get first team football regularly. Last season, he only played 2 matches in the Premier League under Roberto Mancini. He has already earned a call-up from the national team of Republic of Ireland, and his manager at Manchester City has said that he would surely use Cunningham more in his first team this season. It will still not be easy for Greg to make his way up the order, with Aleksandar Kolarov and Wayne Bridge being more accomplished and experienced defenders in the squad.
Fabian Delph, Aston Villa
Fabian Delph was signed by Aston Villa last season from Leeds; like most young players, he has not seen much of first team action yet. Martin O’Neill, when he signed the player, said that he sees a lot of potential in the 20 year old. Now that O’Neill is no longer at the helm, it would be interesting to see if the promised game time is given to the youngster in his 2nd season or he would once again be watching from the sidelines for most of the season. However, since James Milner has now made his way out of Villa Park, Fabian may yet get some starts in the first team in the upcoming season.
David ‘Junior’ Hoilett, Blackburn Rovers
The young man has been making news in the Rovers camp, and Hoilett may just be ready to take the next step. He has just signed a 2 and a half year contract with Blackburn Rovers and is expected to be a regular in the Blackburn team in the new season.
Team manager Sam Allardyce has shown great faith in the young Canadian striker, and said that he is definitely part of his plans for the club. Therefore, the North American will certainly be one to watch out for this season.
All these players have immense potential, but they still have to take the next step (if given the opportunity) to make a name for themselves. It remains to be seen that how many of them would actually get the first team football action their respective managers have promised them.
