Question:

Young female cat around age 6 months meowing before age of first heat?

I've befriended a young stray cat and I think that I may get her spayed in the very near future. When I found her, she was meowing a lot (not very loudly), and was affectionate after getting over fear, but she didn't have the standard treading and butt positioning that I've seen on a cat in heat. Could the steady meowing just be attention seeking? Maybe it was a sign that she is nearing sexual maturity, but it hasn't arrived yet?

  1. Yep - she will gain as much attention and have s*x with as many males as possible in order to get pregnant.

  2. Don't delay... have her spayed NOW.

She is calling for males.... she may not be ready right this minute but that will change very fast.

  3. Kittens can go into first heat as young as 4 months old.  Usually it happens when they weight about 5 pounds.  I'd have her spayed now.

  4. She's probably in heat.

Female cats can go into heat and get pregnant as early as 4 months of age. They are usually in heat for 7 to 10 days at a time, and will go in and out of heat every week or two until they are mated or spayed.

It is best to spay and neuter all cats before they reach sexual maturity (as early as 3 months to before 6 months) to avoid pregnancy, deadly pyometra, spraying and other behavioral issues, discomfort to the cat and the annoying behaviors that unfixed cats display.

    Please Spay and Neuter!
