Youngster Te Wera Bishop signs with Boston Red Sox – MLB News
The Boston Red Sox has recently signed the 17-year-old Te Wera Bishop to their team for a potential career in Major League Baseball.
It was a dream coming true for the youngster as he received a call by Red Sox officials stating their interest in the dynamic softball player.
"I thought it was a joke at first, I thought Dad was just playing around. Then I actually started believing him and I was overwhelmed really," Te Wera said. "I've always been a softball player, I never thought I'd make it to Baseball, but there's an opportunity."
Although it is not unusual for a baseball team to be interested in a softball player, it does not happen very often unless the player is unusually skilled. Talent scout Jon Deeble seems to have full faith in the tremendous abilities of the youngster.
Deeble said, "He's got tremendous arm strength; he's obviously got raw power in swinging the bat. But in saying that he's got to make a lot of adjustments and it is a long road for him and there is a lot of work ahead."
Jon is under the impression that the youngster is immensely talented and can be groomed by the Red Sox for a very successful career in Major League Baseball.
This will be the first time in the Red Sox history that they have taken in a player from New Zealand. Deeble feels that it is a positive step forward for New Zealand, as he thinks many talented players will start to come from this part of the world.
Given his young age and the fact that Te Wera is a softball player, the Red Sox understand the importance of managing his work-outs as not to rush the player into the game. With some training and practice it seems the Red Sox see something in the teenager
that they are willing to groom him over the next few years for a potential place in the Major Leagues. It will be exciting to see how well Te Wera performs for the Red Sox as he may become the next baseball superstar.
