i worked in mexico for one year as a teacher of english....and in costa rica for 6 months doing the same....i volunteered for 3 months (after costa rica) in el salvador.

since i have a degree in education....it was fitting.  i just went and got the jobs after i got there.  

you do need to find out what the country you have chosen is in need of....and then find out if you somehow can fit in.

pay was tiny but enough for me to live on.  especially in mexico. i had plenty.  

in mexico, i was working and getting paid by some sort of scholarship i guess. i did not question it.......but to go by the books would have taken some doing....

anyhow. have fun.
