"I just hope they don't get too silly with it. We need to be a bit careful that we don't jump head-first in and go gung-ho the other way and make too many calls. I don't know how many times there have been three really dodgy decisions in an innings too often. It means almost a third of the wickets that you need to get a team out, you can contest, which seems like a high number to me."

Tim Nielsen, Australia's coach, isn't too keen about the idea

Do you agree with him?

IMO, this bit of vindication coming from the Australian coach was a bit ironic and showed a complete lack of thought or common sense !

I would have thought that history should have been the guide to navigation in these perilous times.

  1. Fine, let's leave all decisions to the on-field umpires, but, no more replays. The couch experts get to see it once at normal speed, the same as the umpires do.

  2. I think Tim Nielsen has a point there. But trial and erorr, i think after a few matches have been played using this system it should then be reviewed again, and points like what Tim is saying should be taken into consideration, any faults should be corrected.

When your using tecchnology you have to make sure your using it properly.

  3. I can see his point of view. just look at what all this video c**p has done for rugby league. Refs aren't game to make a decision on their own anymore, it holds up the game too much if every little thing is 'looked at' by technology wielding refs/umpires.I think cricket did just fine without too much of it. Look how much of real life doesn't have such things, e.g., a surgeon doesn't have replay in case he makes a mistake, a teacher doesn't get a second chance if he fails at his job. Life is becoming way too high tech. Let's get back to trusting the umpires, we all had wrong decisions made against us. It's just that some people can't accept the umpire's decision, but if it is made by technology, who will they then blame? Don't worry, they WILL find someone to blame, it's never their own fault!

  4. im not oppose the technology.... with the help of it we can get back to rite decision which given wrong by umpires like Steve Bucknor

  5. who cares? cricket is boring.

  6. This is basically a welcome move, no doubt about it. It is better than batsman staying in ground after decision is given by umpire and being charged for dissent.

It is going overboard for sure; I think the next time ICC will replace all umpires with automatons, so that no mistake will happen, and all decisions are given correctly.

  7. Tim is from the old school where the umpires decision is the spirit of the game.  However I think that time is past and we, cricket collectively, has already embraced the tech monster. It is just a matter of how much.  When you see things like Hawkeye and its acceptance as fact (of ball flight), and hi-res replays for run outs, I for one think it's probably a good thing.  Like it or not the spirit of the game has been compromised for some time.

Just as we have accepted the use of technology, so have we become more critical of parts of the game where technology isn't used. The most contentious 'out' in cricket is the LBW.  It is only a matter of time before technology will be enlisted to adjudge that 'out'. This will be a step forward.

The end result could be that we could get to a situation where the umpires are only required to intervene during the fights and a place for the bowlers to hang their sweaters on.

Edit: Dork if you think cricket is boring, go to another section ... take a hike!

  8. I can see where he is coming from, after all he is 'old' school..

But i think Tim needs to sit down and think of things from an umpires perspective..They don't have the luxury of an instant replay. They have a split second to make a decision which could have a big impact on a match.

We need the technology to shut up all these supporters of the 'loosing' teams. At least with a replay they can see for themselves if it was out or not.

The technology like Snicko and slow motion replays is needed in cricket these days.

And i do not think the was anything 'vindictive' in Tim Neilson's opinion's either. He is just making a comment.

  9. i LOVE umpire reviewing system~

then no unfair advantage to some Rich cricket nations~

    technology or no technology
