Question:

Your opinion on the Baby Bjorn?

What do you think of this carrier? I hear from mothers that they love them and so does their baby. However, my mother-in-law took me to a seminar (granted, it was at a store that does not sell Baby Bjorn) and says that they are bad for babies because of how babies sit in them - now she is 100% against them. I'm still undecided because of the fantastic things I hear from parents - including my brother-in-law who says sometimes it's the only thing that will make his 2 month old daughter stop crying.

What is your opinion?

  1. I never did like mine. I preferred the wrap/sling things... of course when my son was a baby he HATED being confined in any way. He never even liked being swaddled as a newborn.

  2. I have never used one but I HAVE used a ring sling and it works great! My son is 22 months and still likes to be in it, although he is a bit heavy now, LOL! Another thing to think of is price. You can make your own sling for pennies compared to the price of a brand new baby bjorn.

  3. All you can do is try it. Keep the receipt and box and if you don't like it take it back for a refund and try another. Sites like epinions.com can help you choose by you reading other buyer's reviews on the product.

  4. Waste of money. Barely used it. Baby didn't like it at all. Took it back and bought something useful. Uncomfortable for both of us.

  5. look up the baby bjorn item on google and other websites and see what other people have to say about them and see if there are any recalls on the item

  6. I've never used one, but everything I've read and heard says that they're amazing!  I'm not sure how babies sit in a Bjorn differently from any other carrier.  Perhaps it was just store trying to sell their own brand.

  7. somebody gave me one for my first baby.  I hated it. It hurt my back.  I used a ring sling for my oldest daughter until she was two.  For my youngest I bought an Ergo carrier.  I use my Ergo all the time.  It is so much better.  It holds the baby different from the bjorn.

  8. they are ok for older babies, but it's really better to have a sling for a younger baby.  slings allow a baby to rest is a more natural position while being carried.  many slings can be used in multiple positions so that they will grow with the baby.

  9. Our Bjorn was a lifesaving crystopper up until about 3mo, and then totally discarded in favour of a ring sling. It fell out of favour with baby, who seemed too...big; they are useless for babies after a certain age, just terrible on the parent's back.

I'm inclined to think the criticism about Bjorn positioning and strain on babies' spines etc is only valid if baby is in it a LOT. That said, baby may be in it quite a bit...

If I received one as a gift again I would happily use it again with another baby, but if buying it myself I'd go straight to a sling or an "Ergo" carrier (with the "newborn insert").
