So, here's the story. Firstly, I learned to NEVER rent from friends. I rented a doublewide from a friend when I moved back into town because I couldnt find anything else. It was in substandard condition, and I fixed it up. This was in December. There was no lease, no deposit. So, over the course of that time, the toilet stopped working (which they installed a new one, the only thing they fixed) One of the eyes on the range shot sparks every time you touched it and threw the breaker (grandfather fixed) they didnt install the wax ring on the toilet correctly, leaked, and destroyed the subfloor in two parts of the house, The dryer that was provided stopped working (I put my own that I had in storage in cause they didnt fix it) and finally, the last straw was the WATER HEATER went out three weeks ago, and they wouldnt even respond to me. So, I looked for a place, packed my stuff, found a NICE townhouse that I had looked at before and it wasnt available then, but is now, and left. I mailed them the keys and ensured they'd be there by the beginning of the month.

So, I get an email tonight stating:

Subj: KEYS?

Hey,

Hey, havent talked to you in awhile. I got keys in the mail today, is everything ok? All last week I was gone to the beach, about 3 days before we left I broke my cell phone. If you have tried to call it is probably going to voicemail. I ordered a new phone and it should be here the 1st of next week or maybe tomm. You should have (her partners) # 123-456-7890. With out my phone, I do not know your cell #, (My partner) doesnt have it programmed in her phone. So, whats your #?

Just call (My partners) # or send me an email

Thanks

The thing that makes me mad is that I had tried that very same number to fix my problems. Should I even bother contacting them back? There was no lease.

Thanks.

  1. With no lease you were on a month to month verbal lease, however even in this situation you are required to give proper notice when you leave (probably 30 days notice in written form).  Anyhow, to late for that now.  I'd just call him up, explain all the problems you had and that you have decided to leave because of all this.

They may be mad and could even sue you for rent (since you didn't give notice), you'll just have to see what comes of this.  I think they probably know you have left and are just being nice now in hopes you'll come back.  Since you have already signed a lease somewhere else its to late for you to go back - no real point (p**s them off or p**s off the new landlord, I'd choose pissing them off).
