  1. The barriers serve both as a physical barrier and a warning.

In the UK they used to consist of gates which were swung across the road when the train was due to cross but have now been largely replaced by hydraulic lifting booms.

Did part of your questin get eaten up by yahoo? That happens.

The barricades are for saving lives of course,

they are made to come down and stop automobile traffic from pulling in front of an oncoming train.

Unbelievable as it sounds, these things really do save lives, not to be facetious but there are people that dont realize the only totally 100% effective way to avoid being ran over by a train is to LOOK, each time, for yourself and not to trust anyone else or their mechanical devices.

Hope this asnwers your question, i couldnt really tell what you were wanting.

  3. The barricade provides positive separation between automobiles and trains, so that only the most inattentive or unrealistic people can still get killed at a crossing that is so equipped.
