  1. I like how a couple teams only retire numbers of its players who are in the  Hall of Fame (Giants, Red Sox). I hate how some teams retire numbers for the sake of having retired numbers (Astros, Padres) and the worst of all is retiring the "number" for someone who never played in the Majors (Angels, Cards, Rays).

  2. It is the greatest honor a team can do for a player, why wouldnt you like that? Yankees are running out of numbers though. lol

  3. Every team retires numbers of legends who played there (for the most part). I think it's fitting that teams retire numbers, because after that happens, no one wants to see someone else wearing it.

  4. I love the idea of paying tribute to players by having the jersey number retired and I do see how eventually there will be a number shortage but some teams take it too far with retiring too many numbers.

  5. I agree with it to an extent. It has tradition and sentimental value. Although they'll eventually run out of numbers ;)

  6. I love it

It Honers the players, its great

and you will always remember the Player that way

like the Old Giants Pitcher Kirk Rueter

  7. I think as long as the player meets whatever criteria the team has for retiring that players number than it is fine to retire as many as you wish.  Everyone gets on the Yankees for having 15 retired numbers (8 twice) plus 42 for Jackie Robinson (and soon for Rivera) but lets not forget the Dodgers have 10 retired numbers which isn't all that far behind.

  8. Yeah it shows respect to the great players...but only the great players numbers should be retired...like the legends

  9. yes, i like it, the padres don't have that many so its ok for now, but it must be hard for yankee fans that single digit numbers are almost all gone......

  10. Yeah. I love the idea. My favorite team is the Braves. They have their legends' numbers retired:

    44 - Hank Aaron

    3 - Dale Murphy

    21 - Warren Spahn

    41 - Eddie Mathews

    35 - Phil Niekro

    Plus #42 of course.

If you had your number retired to join names like that, wouldn't you feel honored? I think it's a great thing to do. Honors the best of the best. Fun thing is...I have grown up watching 2, possibly 3 that will probably have their numbers retired:

    29 - John Smoltz

    6 - Bobby Cox

    10 - Chipper Jones

In a long, long time though, they may run out of numbers  :)

  11. I like the idea.  The Royals only have 3 #s retired - George Brett's #5 (the best player in team history), Frank White's #20 (a homegrown KC product who was an intregal part of the successful Royals teams in the 70s and 80s) and d**k Howser (manager of the '85 World Series team and kind of emotional addition because he died the next year from a brain tumor).

  12. I like retired numbers. It is a way to honor players that have contributed so much to your team.

  13. Yes it's a great idea to pay tribute to a player who was a great _________ (fill in team name)

Unfortunately, sometimes it's not deserved.  Ex.  Wade Boggs in TB.  TB just wanted to have a number retired.

Don't get me wrong.  Boggs was a helluva ball player, but his tenure in TB hardly merited having his number retired.

    Buzz - The Rays have only 2 numbers retired  #42 (J. Robinson)and 12 (Boggs).

CubsBear -- which # for the Yankees shouldn't be?

  14. I like the idea of teams retiring numbers, but I think teams need to be a little pickier with who's numbers they retire.  The Cubs only have 4 numbers retired (5 with #42) while the Yankees have 17 (technically 15 because #8 is retired for 2 people and #42 is retired in all of baseball).  17 retired numbers for 1 team is a little ridiculous no matter how many superstars have played for your team, be a little more selective.  The Yankees only have 2 numbers (2,6) that aren't retired between numbers 1 through 10.

  15. I love the fact that the Twins retire numbers. We've only retired 5 of them -which is low compared to some teams, but all five men have meant so much to the Twins' organization, it would be a shame not to honor them, and let somebody else have their number.

I love the fact that nobody will ever again wear-

    #3 for Harmon Killebrew

    #6 for Tony Oliva

    #14 for Kent Hrbek

    #29 for Rod Carew

    and

    #34 for Kirby Puckett

They are forever going to be the greatest players the Twins have ever had, and will be loved and remebered forever because of it.
