Question:

Your thoughts on Macbeth?

I finished reading the play the other day.

I think Macbeth and his wife are evil, selfish, miserable people. The play, to me, is very thought-provoking. Makes you wander--there are actual people out there who kill everyday like it is no big deal, just to gain power. What -is- power? Something unimportant when compared to love, family, friends, and life in general. Power did not get Macbeth anywhere.

What do you think?

  1. Hi Keira!

What I think is fascinating in the play is the nature of their relationship. good relationships bring out the best in each other but this one seems to bring out the worst - a real poisoned partnership!

Because of the society that they inhabit, women have no value except for their fertility. Because Lady M has not been able to satisfy this requirement she invests all her ambition in her husband with disastrous outcomes for them both.

Without each other they would not have explored this darker side to their characters.

  2. I think that you are quite right !

  3. Here in the US we have thousands of murders each year. While most are domestic, plenty are for position, power and wealth, in the drug trade. So certainly there are people who value themselves over the lives of other people.

The real life Macbeth was King of the north west of Scotland. His story is not too much like Shakespeare's but it is pretty interesting. Eventually he capitulated to the English King.

  4. My thoughts on the story of Macbeth are that the play shows us that power and wealth do not bring happiness or satisfaction in life.
